In the works purchased in 2007 and 2016, Beate Gütschow explores the relationship between reality and its depiction in the photographic image. Seven cycles on this theme have emerged since 1999, among them the two series on show here: “LS” (landscape) and “S” (city).
Like all her works, these eight photographs of landscape and architecture raise issues of perception in subtle, layered ways. The artist refers to historical ages in the life of pictures, using contemporary photographic tools to reflect on them: landscape painting in the 17th and 18th centuries, and modern and postmodern architecture. This is not about the subjective take on landscape and architecture that each of us has, but about the cultural factors that influence us when we contemplate pictures.
