Boris Mikhailov’s (* 1938 Kharkov, Ukraine) multi-faceted work of snapshots, banal photography, hand-colored portraits, reportage photos and self-stagings has been made during the past forty years – but until the 1990s it has barely been shown publicly. Because: these pictures shock! Mikhailov shows the homeless people of Kharkov up close, partially naked and with almost no conventional or aesthetic filters, which would allow the viewer an inner distancing.
