Alicia Framis

Modest Fashion

Group show, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Netherlands

Framis joins an international group of fashion designers and artists in the exhibition "Modest Fashion organized by the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

Is My Body Public? is a collection that explores the borders between what is public and private in our everyday lives. The dresses resemble the aesthetics of women’s lingFramiserie but are in fact banners for demonstration. The text 'Is my Body Public?' is embroidered on every dress in 15 different languages, representing women worldwide. The government collects all kinds of data about its citizens that is in fact very private information. Framis asks herself where her privacy ends. Where does the fear of the other and the need to control people by gathering as much information as possible begin?
"Framis literally oversteps the boundary between the private and the public setting. With the question Is My Body Public?, she literally puts the alleged ¨availability¨ of the female body on display, thus touching on discussions on sexual violence and intimidation that are not only taking place in Spain and the Netherlands, but throughout the world"— Mirjam Westen
