Jana Sterbak

Life Size

Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg

Sterbak’s works are characterised by upheavals, opposites and poetry. She first attracted widespread attention in 1987 with “Vanitas: Flesh Dress for an Albino Anorectic”, a dress made of raw meat which turns into jerky over the duration of the show and which most recently caused an international stir when it was adapted by the pop artist Lady Gaga.

Jana Sterbak’s subversive, ironic and humorous art is full of allusions. In addition to creating haunting expressions of physical experiences she finds poetic and mysterious images that cry out to be decrypted. Examples from various stages of her career will show how she creates distorted, even grotesque situations by means of simple interventions, which not only shed new light on our human condition, shaped as it is by upheaval, but question it profoundly.

The exhibition will be part of the 38th Duisburger Akzente
Funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation
In cooperation with the Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck
