12th HAVANA BIENNIAL, Public Intervention Opening: Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 8.30 p.m.
The installation El cuarto oscuro/The Dark Room works as personal review of the new published on the daily press. Starting from a selection of images taken from local newspapers, the piece proposes an atypical lecture, from where new stories and visual associations arise.
The Dark Room makes reference, on the one hand to Garaicoa´s interest in live photography and archives, on the other hand to control and manipulation of information and news in contemporary societies. They are images that, thanks to the magic of photography or the event that precedes any news, come out to light for the first time–or stay definitely hidden. It is here where the central element of this intervention, the light, becomes a representation of a historic moment in which photography and image define the perception of reality.
During the 12th Habana biennial, El cuarto oscuro/The Dark Room can be seen as an intervention in two architectural spaces of the city, the Velasco-Sarrá Palace - the current office of the Spanish Embassy- and the National Music Museum.
