During Art Weekend Munich we will present works by Indian artist Tejal Shah, who is having her first mayor presentation in Germany. India’s rapid development in recent years has paved the way for a young generation of artists that expresses itself intelligibly on the global level.
Shah‘s works deal with the issue of sexual categorization and the notion that there is room in be- tween the closely defined gender boundaries.
Being an active feminist and homosexual, the artist is not unfamiliar with social marginalization. This exclusion has sharpened her viewpoint. Shah studied film and new media abroad, including a year at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her perform- ances, videos, and installations explore the milieu of transsexuals and others who are thrust to the edges of society. The title of our exhibition, The Incidental Self, alludes to the coincidental nature of gender, body, and physiognomy.
