Kiki Smith

Kiki Smith´s sculptures and constellations of figures represent creature-like states of being. The bodies, which are usually modeled after real people, squat, kneel, duck, bend, rock, lie, or hang in positions that make them seem exposed. Sometimes these bodies are specific figures from religion, mythology, and history. Sometimes they seem weightless, are placed on the walls, writhe on the floor, or use the space in unusual and uncouth ways. They are plain human creatures.
In addition to the three-dimensional works, the artist has also worked with drawings, prints, and videos. Since 1982, Smith has had a meteoric career. Although - or perhaps because - she triggers shock reactions by delving into the intimate areas of physicality, she is one of the most internationally well-known and respected women artists today.
